About this video

Speakers show how who you work for changes your job. A former banker had to answer clients even at 10 PM or 1 AM, a public finance worker serves city and state residents and elected officials, and others feel their work matters because it helps entrepreneurs and young people from challenging backgrounds.

You'll be able to

  • describe how working for clients, the public, or a mission differs.
  • explain how an employer or client affects expectations like work hours.
  • think about who I would want my work to serve.

(lively music) - So previously in banking, the job was very client facing, which means if the company has a question for you or an ask for you at, you know, 10 PM, it's in your best interest to do whatever it takes to get them a reasonable response by the next day.

And it can be a big ask, it can be a little ask, it can come at 10 PM, it can come at 6 PM, it can come at 1 AM but if you wanna maintain that client relationship, you should probably be able to respond in a reasonable amount of time.

- I specifically work in finance, public finance, and public finance is a combination of, you know, using taxpayer dollars and buying bonds and macroeconomics and taking all of that to answer a really thorny question, which is what is best for the people who...

For the residents of the city, for the residents of the state? And how do we serve a bunch of different elected politicians and people in order to get to this vision?

- And I think that it makes me feel like my work is actually impacting people. And I can see it how these people are great entrepreneurs, but they perhaps didn't have the business background

- I like that I get paid, like to help people, because I get paid to help young people who grew up like I did with challenging environments. But yet, like we get an opportunity to change not only their life, but their grandkids' life. (lively music continues)
