About this video

Three professionals share what they love most about their job function. A surgeon loves seeing patients recover quickly after an operation, a consultant-style professional enjoys solving a different problem every day, and a teacher loves seeing students' 'light bulb moments'.

You'll be able to

  • describe what three different professionals find rewarding about their jobs.
  • explain the difference between instant gratification and variety as reasons to enjoy a job.
  • reflect on which kinds of job rewards matter most to me.

(upbeat music) - I mean, I love what I do, honestly. I think just seeing patients come in with a specific like illness or pathology. And knowing that, you know, you played a critical role in getting them to their baseline or how they used to be, right? So for instance, some people would come in with like, let's say a bleed in their brain where they cannot even move any of their extremities.

They cannot do anything. They're uptrended, they are intubated, you know, and you take them to the OR and you evacuate that blood and then the next day you see them and then they're like moving all their extremities. They're like literally talking to you back, I think is the most rewarding experience like you would ever see.

Because there's that instant gratification, right? So you do something and then immediately you're able to see results.

- The best thing that I like about my function is it's very consultative. I don't do the same thing every day. I do something different. I'm solving a different problem with a different internal team. I'm working with a different vendor.

- Being able to help students, like truly help students. And you know how we always talk about like the light bulb moment? Like you can actively see the light bulb moment. And I think that's one of the most beautiful things in teaching is when students can actually understand like really complex stuff.

And I think it's really, really nice to see. (upbeat music)
