About this video

Four people show how different work can be: tracking thousands of satellites at night, 'red teaming' an AI language model to find safety problems, editing audio and video to tell a story, and testing mussels and water at beaches to keep people safe.

You'll be able to

  • describe at least three very different kinds of work from the video.
  • explain what red teaming an AI model means.
  • explain why some jobs involve testing for safety.

Key words

satellite
An object that orbits Earth, often used for communication, weather or GPS.
catalog
An organized list of items, here the objects being tracked in space.
red teaming
Deliberately trying to break or trick a system to find its weaknesses so they can be fixed.
jailbreak
Tricking an AI system into ignoring its safety rules.
contaminated
Made dirty or unsafe by harmful substances or germs.
Transcript

(fun upbeat music) - That's usually just being sure like, "Oh, are all my satellites playing nice up there? Are they too close, are they tumbling? Are they having problems?" And so I think our catalog has about 3,000 objects in it, and I cover about half of those because I work at night.

- So in essence, my responsibility is to be a sort of prompt engineer for the language model for the purpose of safety, which is to say red teaming, which it's kind of like trying to break this language model and jailbreak it, so to speak.

- Manipulate audio and video to tell the story I want. I can't create it out of nothing. So if they didn't shoot it, I can only do so much.

- We also go out to the beaches and collect mussels. We do water sampling to make sure that the water is not contaminated. We make sure that the mussels are not contaminated 'cause people eat the mussels, and make sure that it's safe for individuals to swim in.
