Transcript

- [David] Wordsmiths, hey, I'm aboard an alien spaceship, getting to know the crew. This is my new friend, Grobulux. Grobulux, say hello to Earth.

- [Grobulux] David, it's my pleasure. Welcome aboard the pale green dot.

- [David] Thank you. Can you tell me and the wordsmiths at home about what you're up to, Grobulux?

- [Grobulux] Yeah, happily. I'm part of an exploration mission. We are going around the galaxy, trying to identify new places where we can expand.

- [David] Um, what do you, what do you mean expand? Like, you're here to conquer Earth?

- [Grobulux] Yeesh! No, my goodly Earth dude. We're expanding our business. Our planet is famous for its donuts, and we are scouting for a new location. Do earthlings like donuts?

- [David] Yes. And you know what else earthlings like?

- [Grobulux] Ooh! Is it vocabulary words?

- [David] You catch on quick, my friend. - [Grobulux] Oh boy!

- [David] Our words today are exploration, identify, and expand. Exploration. Exploration, it's a noun. It means traveling to learn more about an unknown place. We can see the word explore in there, but with the suffix, T-I-O-N, tion, which makes verbs in den nouns.

So Grobulux and his crewmates are exploring Earth. Their job is exploration.

- [Grobulux] It's a nice job. - [David] I bet. Identify. Identify, it's a verb. It means to figure out or say what something is. And it's also a noun. If we put on T-I-O-N again, if we put on tion again, identification, which can mean a few different things. It can be the act of figuring out what something is, and it can also be proof that you are who you say you are.

So like, my passport is a form of identification because it proves that I'm David.

- [Grobulux] Ugh. I look like such a larva on my passport. It's so embarrassing!

- [David] We've all been there, man. And finally, expand. Expand, a verb. It means to grow bigger. The noun form is expansion. The act of growing bigger in size, number, or amount.

- [Grobulux] Yeah, we want to expand the number of Fleebo Donuts locations.

- [David] Your planet's called Fleebo? - [Grobulux] No, that's silly. My city is called Fleebo.

- [David] Gotcha. Okay, so let's use these words in some senses, huh?

- [Grobulux] Yes, please. - [David] Billions of years from now, the sun will expand into a giant red star.

- [Grobulux] It will grow larger? - [David] Yes, exactly. It will increase in size. An expansion.

- [Grobulux] Is that Earth there, in the path of the star expansion?

- [David] Yeah, but you know, billions of years from now, so not our problem, right?

- [Grobulux] Okay, I'm making a note. Rent don't buy.

- [David] Next sentence. My career in space exploration ended when I learned how terrible astronaut food was.

- [Grobulux] See, this is the problem we are hoping to solve. My people explore the stars in comfort, eating delicious donuts as we travel to learn more about unknown places.

- [David] As you explore? - [Grobulux] Precisely.

- [David] Finally, Grobulux, can you tell me what this is? I'm trying to identify this glowing alien device.

- [Grobulux] I'm in a sentence? - [David] Yes. What is this object, please. Can you identify it for me?

- [Grobulux] Oh, you want me to tell you what this glowing thing is?

- [David] Yeah. Yes, please. - [Grobulux] That's a donut scoop. We scoop donut batter with it.

- [David] Why does it glow? - [Grobulux] Because glowy things look neat.

- [David] Makes sense to me. Hey, that's all the time we've got for this one, wordsmiths. Until next time, you can learn anything. David out.

- [Grobulux] Grobulux out. Did I do it? - [David] You did it, bud.

- [Grobulux] Would you like a donut? - [David] Yeah.
