About this video

A Balinese mask maker explains that sacred masks can be repaired and that parts such as the hair are usually replaced about every two years. Before repair, a ceremony sends the spirit out of the mask so it becomes secular, and after repair, another ceremony brings the spirit back into the mask.

You'll be able to

  • explain that sacred Balinese masks are believed to hold a spirit.
  • describe why ceremonies are held before and after a sacred mask is repaired.
