About this video
The Cold War started with singing and dancing, as American and Soviet troops met in Germany at the end of the Second World War. But the leaders of the two new superpowers soon sent the world back into global conflict. While they avoided direct war with each other and--just barely--avoided nuclear catastrophe, the US and USSR waged proxy wars against each other in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Why did the US and its allies triumph in 1991? Let your students decide for themselves. 01:20 What events marked the beginning of the Cold War? 02:05 What was the policy of containment and where did this policy originate? 03:04 What alliance systems were created during the Cold War? 06:57 What tools did the US and Soviet Union use to try to win the Cold War? 09:11 How did the US eventually win the Cold War?
