You'll be able to

  • find the amount of a discount by subtracting.
  • find a discount percentage by dividing the discount by the original price.
  • convert 0.625 to 62.5%.

- [Instructor] We're told that Ava buys snow boots for $24. After one winter, she outgrows the boots. So, she sells the boots at a neighborhood yard sale for $9. What was the percentage of the original, or what percentage of the original price was the discount?

Pause this video and have a go at that. All right, so how much is the discount? Well, it's the difference between 24 and $9. So if we were to say 24 minus 9, that is equal to $15. And so what we could say is, the original price was $24. She discounted it by $15, which seems reasonable, because not only did she outgrow it, but she was wearing it for over one winter.

So you take $15 off of 24, you get to $9. But they're not asking us the total amount of the discount. They're saying what percentage of the original price was the discount. So, the discount is $15. The original price is $24. So, this is going to be, let's see.

I might as well get my calculator out. This would be the equivalent of 5/8, but some of you might know what that is. But let's see, five, well, let me just... 15 divided by 24 is equal to 0.625. So, we get 0.625, which is the same thing as 62.5%. You could just think about is we're multiplying by 100%, which is the same thing as just multiplying by one.

You're just expressing it in a different way. So, it's a 62.5% discount. You took 62.5% off of $24, which happened to be $15 to get to 9.
