About this video

The video shows how a student can use Khanmigo, an AI tutor, while studying MCAT content. It covers three uses: summarising a video or article, asking clarifying questions such as examples, and taking a quiz with real-time feedback. It then shows how Khanmigo helps with practice passages by discussing figures, working through questions step by step, and condensing long explanations.

You'll be able to

  • use Khanmigo to summarise and clarify a video's main points
  • use Khanmigo to quiz myself and get feedback on my answers
  • use Khanmigo to interpret a passage figure and work through a question

Key words

- [Instructor] In this video, we're going to be going over how we can use Khanmigo as a personal tutor to help us deepen our understanding when going through our content review videos and articles for the MCAT, or to help us tackle practice passages. So first, let's go to unit 10 of the MCAT course, which corresponds to Foundation 5 or chemical processes.

And we'll go to the lesson on acid/base equilibria. Let's open to the video on acid-base definitions. So this video goes over the basic definitions between a Bronsted-Lowry acid and base, and a Lewis acid and base and how they compare and contrast with one another.

I can ask Khanmigo for clarifications as I go through the video, or I can ask it questions at the end to kind of clarify my understanding or recap the video. For instance, it's helpful to get a recap of the main points of the video, and even if this isn't included at the end of the video, I can ask Khanmigo to provide that for me.

Here I'm going to type in can you give me a summary of the main points from this video? Okay, and here I get a recap of the different definitions for Bronsted-Lowry acid and base and Lewis acid and base. I can also ask some clarifying questions like asking for examples.

So can you give me an example of something that would be defined as a Bronsted-Lowry acid but not a Lewis acid? So it gives me a classic example of hydrogen chloride, which acts as a Bronsted-Lowry acid, but not as a Lewis acid because it doesn't directly accept an electron pair.

You can also have Khan Academy quiz me on the concepts from this video to reinforce the concepts I learned and make sure that I really understood what I was learning from the video. Okay, so can you quiz me on the content in this video? And what's really cool about this is that Khanmigo will come back with a list of questions and then I'll be able to send Khanmigo my answers and get real-time feedback about whether my answers are correct, whether I'm processing the information correctly, and we can go through a discussion together about that.

So Khanmigo can help with learning in several ways, and this can apply to video-based learning or learning from written articles. The first way it can help is it can provide a summary of the video that you just watched or the article that you just read to recap the main points.

It could also provide additional or clarifying information. So if you wanna know more about the topic being covered or if you're confused about something, you can have a discussion with Khanmigo about that. And it can provide quizzes at the end of reviewing a video or article to test your understanding of what you watched or what you read.

And then it can provide real-time feedback on whether you're answering the questions correctly and help you fix gaps in your understanding. Okay, now we're gonna see why Khanmigo is also really helpful for working through practice passages and learning how to do those effectively.

Now, we're gonna go to the practice passages in unit two of the MCAT course, which goes over the biological and biochemical foundations passages. And we'll go to Foundation 3: organ systems. Let's go to the role of brown fat. This is a passage about a special type of fat called brown fat in the body.

It goes over what the difference is between brown fat and white fat, the normal type of fat found in the body, and the role of brown fat in mammals and humans specifically. It also goes over a few research studies. So the first study looks at the regulation of body temperature, as well as oxygen consumption in rats that are exposed to 31 degrees Celsius temperature and then 20 degrees Celsius temperature over a period of time to see how the temperature is regulated in different regions and how this might be related to oxygen consumption, which we can predict relates to brown fat.

And then there's another research study that talks about what brown adipose cells look like under the microscope and the discovery of the protein called UCP, uncoupling protein, found in the mitochondrial inner membrane, and the role that it has in brown fat and its function.

So one of the reasons why Khanmigo is so helpful on working through a passage is because when students are learning how to do MCAT passages, they really wanna make sure that they're understanding the passage and understanding the figures even if they aren't tested on this from the set of the six questions that they're given, or even if they're kind of figuring out the right answer, they wanna be sure that they know it's because they're analyzing things thoroughly and correctly.

So one of the things you can do to have Khanmigo help you is while you're working through the passage to kind of discuss the passage contents with Khanmigo and especially go over any kind of data or figures that are present in the passage to make sure that you're making sense of them.

So I can talk to Khanmigo about my own understanding about the figure one and the data shown in figure one. And Khanmigo will actually like give me some information back, but then will ask me a lot of questions to test my own understanding and kind of push me to give my own interpretation of the figure and kind of discuss it back and forth.

I can ask it to help me interpret figure one. It's gonna lead me through a series of questions that helps me to make sure that I understand what this graph is showing and what the different lines kind of indicate. (keyboard keys clacking) Okay, so this way I can kind of make sure that I am analyzing the data properly and that I am really working through the passage effectively before I even get to the questions.

The next thing you can use Khanmigo for is to help you work through the individual questions as well. So this question says, it asks about what will happen to ATP production and mitochondria that contain UCP compared to those that do not. So I'm gonna ask it to help me work through and think through this question.

(keyboard keys clacking) Okay, so we just talked about how the proton gradient is important for the production of ATP and worked through how UCP would affect the proton gradient and then affect ATP production. And you can see Khanmigo continues to ask like follow-up questions.

So I can continue to answer the follow-up questions to kind of expand my knowledge, or I can go back to answering the question and move on to another discussion. (computer dinging) I can also go ahead and answer a question and then use Khanmigo to get more information than what I'm finding in the explanation.

So for this one, it asks what other tissue brown adipose tissue would be similar to. So I can say muscle cells. (computer dinging) Okay, and I get some information back about that in the explanation, but I may wonder what other types of cells might be similar to brown adipose tissue.

So in this case, skeletal muscle was similar to brown adipose tissue because it has a lot of mitochondria as well. But I wanna make sure that I'm not missing any other kinds of cell types that may have a lot of mitochondria and may come up on the MCAT. So I can go ahead and talk about this with Khanmigo as well.

(keyboard keys clacking) Okay, so we can go back and forth with a conversation about that, and learn about other cell types that may have a higher than normal amount of mitochondria. You can also use Khanmigo to help me summarize very long explanations. So in answering a question like this, (computer dinging) I'm getting a very long and detailed explanation, but maybe I don't need the entire explanation and I can use a shorter version and also look at the figures to be able to understand how to analyze these graphs.

So I can ask Khanmigo to go ahead and give me a summary of this explanation. (keyboard keys clacking) This gives me a more concise summary of the explanation so I can go ahead and see if that is enough and if I can read that and then look at the figures and again, try to interpret them for myself even and make sure my interpretation was correct without reading through all of the text of the explanation.

So you can see that Khanmigo kind of helps you maximize your studying and your learning when you're on the passages by helping you to work through the passages, helping you make sure you're understanding the passages before you get to the questions, by helping you work through questions, by giving you more information than you might find in the question and explanation on related topics, and by helping you to summarize the explanation or understand the explanation if you're not really getting it.

So this is a really great tool. It's kind of like having a personal tutor that you can work through things and discuss things with, but it's actually a little bit quicker in its responses, which is great.
